How to Use Oxy Fuel - Oxygen Acetylene - Cutting Torch Equipment Safely

An oxygen acetylene torch flame is around 6000 degrees F. Considering Steel melts at around 2800F that is pretty freakin hot!

Soldering Kit

You can make a lot of things happen with an oxygen acetylene torch kit. You can braze air conditioning line sets, solder copper water pipe, silver braze stainless steel, weld 4130 chromoly tubing, and even heat and bend metal thicker than 1 inch. But oxy-fuel torches can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. OSHA even requires employers to ensure workers that use oxyfuel equipment to be properly trained and qualified for oxy-fuel welding, cutting, heating, and brazing. (see 29 CFR 1910.252)

Soldering Kit

From my 30 plus years in the welding field, I am constantly surprised by the lack of training in the safe operation of oxyfuel equipment.. Even seasoned welders are often deficient in use of oxygen acetylene torches unless they have received hands-on training where demonstration of proficiency was required

Safe operation of oxygen acetylene equipment requires training, willingness to follow basic safety guidelines, and understanding some basic safety principles:

o Oxygen cylinders are pressurized to over 2500 psi and can become a projectile if knocked over. Always , always, always keep the cap screwed on when the cylinder is not secured.

o Acetylene cylinders are filled with acetylene gas compressed into a porous substance saturated with liquid acetone. They should remain upright to prevent liquid acetone from damaging the regulators and restricting gas flow. If you have to lay them down to haul them, let them stand upright for a while before using.

o Never transport or store cylinders in an enclosed space (i,e, trunk of car, or truck tool box) Welding supply stores often display pictures of cars demolished by the explosion of oxygen and acetylene cylinders hauled in the trunk of a car. They even make you sign a waiver if you want to haul cylinders yourself.

o Never use damaged equipment.

o Always open oxygen cylinders very slowly. Opening them quickly is very dangerous and can cause the regulator to explode. Yes I said explode. (if you don't believe me, just Google "regulator burnout")

o Use check valves or combination check valve/flashback arrestors to prevent reverse flow of gases and to prevent mixing of gases.

o Never use oil on any part of the equipment. Oil in the presence of pure oxygen can ignite easily

o Always bleed down the gases and back out the regulator screws when finished using the torch

There are several different manufacturers of oxyfuel equipment: Victor, Smith, and Harris are 3 of the main brands and each designs their equipment differently with certain features in mind. So the operation of each manufacturer's torches is different. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The first thing to do when preparing to operate a oxyfuel torch is to inspect the equipment. Make sure the cylinders are fastened securely to prevent them from falling over.. Next, inspect the hoses to make sure they are not cracked or dry rotted. Feel the brass connectors to make sure they are all tight and ensure the cylinders valves are closed with the regulators reading zero.

If the regulators are not reading zero, one of two things is wrong: The gauge or gauges have been damaged or the previous user failed to bleed the pressure from the line. To release the pressure , open the appropriate valve on the torch and turn the regulator screw clockwise until the needle moves to zero. If the needle does not go to zero, the gauge is damaged and must not be used.

If the gauges are determined to be operating properly the next thing to do is make sure the regulator screws are backed out where you cannot feel spring pressure on them.

Here is a simple ABC, 123 checklist to use for setup and shutdown of oxy-fuel equipment.

o Wear proper Personal protective equipment i.e. shade 3 to 5 ANSI eyewear, gloves etc.

o Inspect the equipment for : Overall condition of hoses, zeroed gauges, check valves, torch, chains on bottles

o If gauges are not reading zero, purge lines to let gauges zero out

o If gauges are damaged replace them

o Open oxygen cylinder valves very slowly. (This is the most important step on this page)

o Select proper tip according to manufacturers guidelines

o Use manufacturers tip chart to determine pressure settings

o Set gauges

o Purge lines individually

o open acetylene torch valve to ¼ turn and Light torch

o Increase acetylene flame high enough to where soot disappears.

o Add oxygen to flame until blue cones define creating a neutral flame.

o Perform work

o Extinguish flame by turning off gas valves on torch (manufacturers differ on whether to turn off acetylene or oxygen first.)

o Turn off cylinders

o Purge lines

o Once gauges are zeroed, back out regulator screws

o Return torch to storage place

o Secure oxy-fuel equipment for next user

Do it Yourself Shower Faucet Replacement

If you are not a plumber you will be one after reading the do it yourself information on shower faucet replacements. Contrary to popular belief replacing shower faucets is not a mammoth task. It can be very simple provided you follow the correct steps.

Soldering Kit

There are many kinds of shower faucets available in the market today. Some are washer type faucets and some are washer-less. There are different reasons why you will need to replace shower faucets. The washer might have worn out, stem may be corroded or the problem may be in washer seat and cartridge. Whatever may be the reason, with the correct set of tools the job can be done in a jiffy.

Soldering Kit

To replace washer type faucets shut off the water supply of the entire house. Then remove the faucet handle by turning the screw clockwise. This can be done with the help of screw driver. After that remove the stem and examine the threads. If they are corroded or worn out then take them to a retailer. If the stem is dirty clean it. If the brass screws are corroded you can replace them too. Take a look at the washer seat. If they are worn out you can reface them using seat dress tool. As faucets are available in various shapes and sizes do remember to install the correct faucet washer. Some stems use O ring. In such cases replace the rings too.

If it is a noisy faucet then the problem may be in the loose washer. In such cases remove the faucet and tighten the washer. The faucets might be noisy due to poor design and construction also. When threading the stem back in faucet body try moving the stem up and down. If it moves then entire faucet may have to be replaced.

In washer-less faucets you will need to replace the working parts. Pre-packaged kits are available. Just follow the instructions carefully.

The diaphragm type faucets are similar to washer type faucets. Here instead of washer you will have a disc. To replace these you need to remove the handle and the stem. If the rubber diaphragm does not come out with the stem it may be still inside the faucet. In such cases, use pliers to peel it from the faucet. Then replace the diaphragm around the disc.

In ball type faucets there will be a ball inside to control hot and cold water. Due to improper ring tension the handle may be leaking. In these cases you will have to replace all the working parts of the faucet. You may need the help of spanner or hex wrench. If the ball is coated with scale you will need to clean it.

For cartridge type faucets you will need to remove the handle. Then there will be a swing spout which needs to be removed. Using a screw driver pull out the retainer clips and then cartridge can be pulled with the help of pliers. While replacing the cartridge, use silicon-grease to lubricate the cartridge.

Remember to :

Always read the installation manual. While soldering copper pipes make sure you remove the cartridge. This is because the excess heat generated may damage the smaller parts in faucet body. Clean out the faucet body with a wet cloth after you finish soldering to remove the flux. Always have an access panel on the opposite wall behind the faucet. This will make it easier to install a new faucet in the future.

"The Little Torch" by Smith

Are you in need of a small lightweight torch for jewelry or other small items? Then the Smith Little Torch is your best solution. The Little Torch works exceptionally well for materials ranging from 3/16" to especially small wires. This Tiny Torch welds, brazes, heats and solders most small projects and is equipped with 5 tips with more available.

Soldering Kit

The Little Torch utilizes most pressurized fuel gas and the list includes: acetylene, propane's, propylene's, hydrogen's, natural gas as well as mapp with oxygen. These gases may be purchased at a nearby welding supply store. Disposable cylinders can be purchased at most home improvement centers. Keep in mind that even though disposable cylinders are the most portable, they are also the most expensive per cubic foot.

Soldering Kit

The Little Smith Torch has numerous tips and accessories to select from. But typically, the kit consists of the #3 through #7; the #2 is sold separately. Also available are the twin welding tips, sizes #4 thru #6 and are employed when you need two points of heat on your project.

The Little Torch can draw upon many types of regulators. As stated previously, disposable are the cheapest but are less accurate. Single stage regulators display more control of flow and they make use of the refillable cylinder.

In addition, the Smith Little Torch can be bought in a variety of different types of kits varying from just the torch itself to complete portable kits. Amongst the most popular kits are the 23-1001D, 23-1010P, 23-1014, 23-1015, 23-1014 and 23-1004A. Each kit contains the Smith Little Torch with differing accessories designed for a specific purpose.

If a broader more dispersed flame is required for brazing, soldering or heating, the Rosebud (multi-flame) tips are perfect. With multi-flame heating tips that have the ability to cast up to 3 ounces of gold or silver, they can also be used for enameling and plastic polishing.

IF you are looking for the perfect organizer solution, the 14014 magnetic torch stand & tip organizer is a practical addition for your Smith Little Torch kit. The solid metal stand contains numbered holes drilled for #2 through #7 tips that make storage and removal as simple as a twist of the wrist.

When customized angles and distances from the handle come into play, the flexible tip extension # 2327-3SP is ideal. With a total length extension of 3 in. it lends itself to increased control and flexibility.

To insure that you product is free from defects in material and workmanship, the Smith Little Torch has a one year manufacturer's warranty from the time of sale.

Making Solar Panels at Home - Build a Solar Panel For About $200

Making solar panels at home is easy with the right materials and instructions. You can make a solar panel for as little as 0. The materials you will need include: solar cells, plywood or plastic board, UV protector for the plywood, Flex-Glass, tin wire at two different thicknesses, silicone, solder, solder iron and or gun, rosin flux pen, nuts, bolts, and wood or metal to use as a frame, and a junction box. You will also want a volt meter to test your panel. (You can borrow this from an electrician.)

Soldering Kit

1. Make a template. A template will make sure that each cell is placed evenly apart. You can purchase 5x5 inch cells for this project. Draw a template making sure that each cell in each row is about 1/4 inch apart. Leave a few inches on the outside edges for the frame of the panel.

Soldering Kit

2. Cut the plastic board or ply wood to the size of panel you want to build. You will want to figure out the size to cut the board or plywood. If you need 100 watts of power then you will make a panel with 50 cells. You may not need that much. If you are using plywood, then you will want to protect it with a coat of UV Guard.

3. Cut the tabbing wire: Cut the wire the same length of two cells plus 1/4 inch so if you were to use the 5x5 inch cells, you would cut the length 10 1/4 inches long. Cut two for each cell. You will be soldering half of the wire to the negative side of one cell and the other half of the wire to the positive side of the next cell. If you do not have coated wire you will need to put solder on the wires or on the tabs of each cell.

4. Use the flux pen and solder gun. Each cell will have two tabs on each side. Run the flux pen along the tab of a cell (blue side or negative side) where you are going to attach the tabbing wire. Solder the wire to the cell. Solder a second wire along the second tab. Do this with all the cells.

5. Attach all the cells in rows. Now turn the cells over and solder the excess wire to the positive side of the other cells making 5 rows of 10 cells (if you are using 50 cell panels). The negative side of cell #1 attaches to the positive side of cell #2 making sure that each cell is 1/4 inch apart in each row.

6. Attach rows using heavy wire: You are going to use the thicker wire to attach all the cells together at the ends. You will be connecting in a series, meaning negative to positive and negative to positive through the panel connecting each row.

7. Test it with the volt meter: Attach the volt meter to the wires on the cells to make sure it is working properly.

8. Use the Silicone to secure the rows of cells to the panel.

9. Put wires through the junction box: There will be two pieces of wire left over from attaching the wires in a series: a positive and a negative that you will solder to a positive and negative electrical wire. Pull through the back of the panel and into the junction box you have attached to the back of the panel with silicone. You can check out the link below to get the guide for all the details.

10. Frame it. You can use a wood border as a frame for the plywood or a metal c frame for the frame of the plastic board. Use silicone to attach the backing and then use nuts and bolt to keep it tight. Use several nuts and bolts to attach the c metal frame to the panel.

Stained Glass - Basic Skills You Need To Make Stained Glass Art

Making stained glass crafts is a wonderful hobby for almost anyone. There's just something magical about the unique beauty of these wonderful objects, but you don't have to be a magician to create stained glass art. Anyone can do it!

Soldering Kit

Making beautiful stained glass objects requires very little initial investment, and even if you have only a basic skill level, the results of your efforts will amaze you.

Soldering Kit

Read the following overview of the skills needed, and I'm sure you'll agree there's no reason you can't jump right in and make a success of your new hobby:

Cutting stained glass

Cutting is probably the most demanding skill you'll need to develop. But don't worry. Over the years, plenty of clever people have refined the glass cutting procedure to get it just right. Cutting is now safe, predictable, and easy.

If you follow standard glass-cutting procedure, use good equipment, and put safety first, you'll find yourself easily cutting the shapes you need with very little waste or breakage.

Grinding pieces of stained glass until they're just the right shape

Glass cutting is an inexact art. When you cut glass, you get the pieces close, but they're never exactly the shape you need them to be to fit your design. And that's where glass grinding comes in.

A good glass grinder resembles a miniature router table, and it makes it a snap to easily shape your rough-cut glass however you want. Any misshapen or jagged edges are easily ground away, and you're left with a perfectly shaped piece that's ready to take its place in the pattern.

Foiling the edges of the cut pieces of glass

As you probably know, solder doesn't adhere to glass very well. In fact, if you tried to solder directly to glass, your creation would fall apart like a loose puzzle. That's where foiling saves the day.

By wrapping copper foil around the cut edges of your pieces of stained glass, you give the solder something to stick to. Foil ties everything together so your stained glass creation becomes a single unit rather than a collection of separate pieces.

You can foil by hand, or use an inexpensive foiling tools to help you along. Either way, it's an enjoyable task that's almost impossible to get wrong.

Soldering stained glass

This is the one you've been waiting for, right? Soldering turns your glass pieces into a single, beautiful creation. And with the right equipment, it's not as difficult as you might think.

Although clean, even soldering takes a bit of practice, even an absolute beginner can get the hang of it very quickly. And if you get some stray blobs of solder where they don't really belong, there's no reason to worry about it. After all, it adds character to your artwork. Anyway, you'll almost always start soldering the back of your artwork first. So when it comes time to do the front, you'll be up to speed and soldering like a pro!

With a good soldering station, you'll always know if your soldering iron is heated up and ready to produce an even bead of solder.

Finishing and framing stained glass creations

Once your artwork is soldered to your satisfaction, there's nothing left but to finish and frame your masterpiece. Finishing is an optional step that removes any imperfections in the solder joints, but lots of folks like to leave things unfinished for a more natural, hand-crafted look.

Framing is easy too, assuming your art is a standard size. If you made your artwork from a kit, it's almost certain that you'll easily find a frame to that fits. But if you're the do it yourself type who designs his or her own stained glass, you'll want to design it to fit a frame.

Step by Step Plans - Building Solar Panels For Home Use

Solar Energy

Soldering Kit

Predicted to be going strong for many years from now and a permanent solution to soaring energy bills and fossil fuel supplies.

Soldering Kit

First step is to learn how to build a solar panel and the steps to generate your own electricity to operate the home appliances. Solar panels for homes should face the sun in order to capture the maximum amount of sunlight each day. In the northern hemisphere, the panels should face south. If the roof of the structure is unsuitable for the installation, you can simply attach your solar panels to poles that have been installed outside in a location which attracts the sun.

Learning how to build your own solar panels, as long as you have the basic diy skills, is actually quite simple and easy by following the step by step instructions how to.

Tools required to build solar panels are basic home handy man and parts are readily available from your local junkyard or home improvement hardware store.

TOOLS.

1.Saw for cutting timber
2. Electric Drill
3. Soldering iron
4. Pliers or wire cutters. Screwdriver set
5. Volt Meter
6. Electrical tape, are just a few to list.

PARTS.

1. Sheets of Plywood.
2. sheets of Plexiglass.
3. electrical cable.
4. Solar Cells.
5. Tabbing Wire.
6. soldering Flux.

Determine how much power you need from each of the solar panels you are going to build. To charge an 18 volt battery, for instance, you would need a panel with 36 solar cells producing .5 volts each.

The most common shape of solar panels for homes is rectangular, one of the advantages of deciding to build your own solar panel is you can build the power panel in any shape to fit onto the roof or post. The manuals and solar packages available on the internet displays great videos explaining the voltage testing, tabbing and wiring procedures to build your own solar panel:

STEPS AROUND THE HOME TO REDUCE YOUR POWER.

- Did you know that taking a few simple steps to reduce your carbon footprint will not only help the planet but will also save you money?

Learning About Solar Panel Construction

Getting Started

Soldering Kit

You can use a solar panel kit to get started building your own solar panel, as it will come with all of the different equipment and components that you are going to require, including solar cells, a soldering iron, solder, flux, and tabbing.

Soldering Kit

All kits will also include detailed instructions so that you can have a step by step guide while building your solar panel system.

It is important to know that there are two basic types of solar panels: normal panels and photovoltaic panels.

The normal panels are those which use solar energy to heat water for basic needs in a home or RV for instance, while the photovoltaic cells work by converting light into energy.

You will have to choose while cells are going to work better for your solar panel system, which will be dependent on what you are actually planning on using the system for.

You can also choose from a variety of different solar mounts, with the two most popular being the single-axis tracker and the dual-axis tracker. Again you will have to make the decision here based on what your purpose for building the actual system is so that you can get the best results possible.

Although solar panel construction can be quite simple, if you do not feel comfortable doing it on your own then the best idea is to hire a professional to come in and get the job done for you.

Just remember that you have a lot of options here so rather than just going with the first company you find, you should instead take a bit of time and browse through your options until you find the solar panel construction team that is going to be best suited for you.

As long as you take a bit of time and put some careful consideration into the process, you should be able to find a great company to assist you here and end up with the perfect solar panel system.
