How To Repair A Leaded Glass Panel

We recently repaired and replaced a leaded glass panel. This was a repair to a leaded window and we traditionally use the copper foil method developed by Tiffany studios in the early 1900's. So we were mixing two styles of glass construction. The results were perfect.

Soldering Kit

1. A client called and asked us to repair a window in their home. The window had a broken piece of glass and we would need to take it from their home, repair it at our shop and reinstall it in their entryway.

Soldering Kit

2. The window frame had been assembled with 45 degree miters in the wood, which required that the nails be removed in order to get the wood out. Fortunately, the nails used were very thin pin nails, similar to a staple in size, so I was able to break the fasteners with a sharp rap on a putty knife at each nail.

3. Once all the pin nails were cut, I was able to carefully remove the wood from the frame work.

4. The leaded panel was very tight in the framework, which is rare, and I had to gently work the panel loose so as not to break it. This installation had one piece of tempered glass on the outside of the door frame and then the art glass. In our studio we insulate window units so that there is tempered glass on each side of the art glass.

5. Because the tempered glass was still in place, I simply replaced the wood pieces back in the frame till the reinstall took place. Normally we put a piece of cardboard or plastic in the opening while it awaits replacement.

6. When I got the panel back to our studio, I first traced the outline of the panel. I knew that since this window was so tight, I had to be absolutely sure that it didn't grow on me in the repair process.

7. I heated the joints of solder and, using pliers, rocked the outer bar back and forth until the outside strip of zinc came loose from the panel.

8. Using a razor blade knife, I loosened the cement joint between the lead and the glass so that I could remove the glass pieces.

9. Once the cement was loose from the glass, I was able to de-solder the joints and work the lead free from the glass.

10. Next, I applied clear tape to both of the broken sides of the glass so that as I eased it out of the panel, it would stay in one piece which I could use as a pattern for the new replacement glass.

11. Once I had the cement and glass loose from each other, I applied gentle pressure on the glass and spread it apart so it was easy to remove from the panel.

12. I used the removed piece of glass as a template to cut my replacement pieces. Since the glass was a close match, but not quite perfect, I replaced both of the pieces so that they both looked the same. Your eye would notice the difference if only one of the pieces was replaced, but couldn't see the small difference since both were replaced.

13. Next, I nailed down the panel on the pattern I traced earlier, so I could make sure the window stayed the right size.

14. Then I slid both of the replacement pieces of glass into the lead came.

15. I tapped them into place tightly using gentle pressure from a glass hammer.

16. Then I nailed the outside lead, in place making sure that the glass was tight and inside the lines of the pattern.

17. Up until this step, the techniques I used are those that both a copper foil artist and a lead artist would use. From this point on, I focused on copper foil methods. I placed a strip of copper foil along the bottom of the panel, so there would be something to solder to. We might have used lead came but the came we had in stock didn't match the original lead.

18. I foiled the bottom three beveled pieces with copper foil, getting ready for soldering the panel.

19. I cut a piece of zinc to fit the panel and nailed it in place, making sure that the panel still fit inside the penciled in pattern.

20. I carefully soldered the joints at the bottom of the panel, using care to only heat the lead that was being attached just enough to solder to, trying to avoid melting the came.

21. When the solder lines were complete, they were a little too shiny to match the original window, so I cleaned it with an ammonia based cleaner which darkened it and then added a dilute black patina to knock the color down.

22. After polishing and waxing the window, it matched the original pretty well.

23. When we went back to the home for the install, my wife, Jeanne wiped the window down for a final cleaning to get rid of any dust and smudges.

24. I removed the molding that was in temporarily and a couple of nails from the frame work. Then I followed Jeanne's example and polished the inside of the tempered glass to get rid of any dust that might have collected.

25. I used my putty knife as a lever to center the window in the opening.

26. Then I applied a small bead of silicone caulk around the entire framework.

27. I gently tapped the wood back in place.

28. Then, since I wasn't going to nail the trim back in place, I forced a stick in the opening between the molding so that they'd be held tightly while the silicon dried. The silicon will form a good enough bond to hold both the window and the molding in place.

Just a few simple steps later, we had the job done with very satisfactory results.

Frys Electronics Online - Get More Bang For Your Buck

We live in a busy world, and often we do not have time to drive down to the local Frys in order to slowly peruse their electronics selection, be pressured into buying by a floor sales clerk, or lug our purchases out to our cars and drive them home. The advent of the internet has created a better way to make your Frys purchases, specifically, online. There are three primary ways in which Frys electronics online can make your electronics purchase a whole lot easier. Especially if the only free time you have is on your lunch hour. First, Frys offers many selections that are only available to you online. Second, Frys online shopping service allows you to browse through thousands of available products, at your convenience, with no pressure. Third, purchases made over the internet can be delivered directly to your home, saving you the time and energy of transporting large purchases.

Soldering Kit

Online Selection

Soldering Kit

Any given Frys store only contains so many square feet. Since this is the case, not every item Frys has to offer is on display at their local showroom. The internet however, provides endless space in which to display and describe the electronics they have to offer. Frys electronics online is set up in a convenient format which allows you to go directly to the assortment of products you are interested in purchasing. Cameras, car electronics, PDAs and office products (and more) each occupy their own portion of the web store. This greatly enhances your browsing experience, as you are able to view a myriad of electronics, which specifically match your personal purchasing focus.

Pressure Free Zone

Frys electronics online can be browsed at your convenience, in either one long session or over the course of several short bursts. In addition, there are very detailed descriptions, which tell you a great deal about the product and its price, without the nuisance of having to deflect the sales pitches of well meaning associates. Shoppers want information, not pressure and Frys online shopping experience is able to provide you with a wealth of information, without the uncomfortable sales push.

Delivery is a Bonus

Transporting electronics from the store to your home or office can be a burden, especially for very busy people. An added bonus to shopping online is that your purchases can be delivered, right to your door. Frys electronics online especially packs each purchase to ensure that your electronics arrive safely at your door, with no scratches or other defects. This is often not the case when you take a purchase directly home. Sometimes your product has been handled and damaged by other store customers, and sometimes your purchase is scratched or damaged while you load, drive and unload your electronics at your destination. When you order online, the only people that have touched your purchases are in the warehouse, and if your purchase arrives damaged, you know exactly who to blame and from whom to get your refund or exchange. An added bonus is that Frys will sometimes run free shipping promotions, such as free shipping on selected seasonal items or on purchases above a certain monetary amount. This is well worth looking into, as promotions such as these can save you a great deal of money.

How Good Or Bad Are Cartoon Channels For Your Kids?

This is a Question, which keeps haunting parents (mostly mothers) of all kids aged 3 to 10. Should we allow kids to watch cartoons, or should it be totally banned, is it good or is it really bad?

Soldering Kit

The issue that often pops up when chatting about young children watching cartoon channels is usually about leaving your children alone with cartoons to divert or entertain them, instead of parents giving our precious time to them.

Soldering Kit

Let's analyze this million-dollar question!
I am a mother of 5-year-old daughter and have been regularly monitoring her television viewing. And this is what I have analyzed.

Let's point out the good points first:
Cartoon shows are neither good nor bad. Occasionally cartoons are being used to demonstrate behavior that we would like our young children to adapt or copy, and even many times these cartoon shows are also used to exemplify qualities we would like our kids to avoid. It is up to the parents to help the child learn which is which.

From time to time there have been some good series like Madeline, Oswald, Noddy, Backyard Science, MAD, Mickey Mouse Club House. And some Hindi Indian Cartoons, which I would suggest are Gali Gali Sim Sim, Choota Bheem, Krishna, Ramayan and all Mythological stories.

It helps improve vocabulary; it could be English or Hindi.

It helps kids in analyzing situations. To understand how small little things are analyzed and then how small little decisions are taken by understanding what is right and wrong.

It helps them understand different cultures, societies, people etc.

There are so many shows, which are really educational, for all ages. And some programs show various Art and Craft activities, which can be actually utilized to put them to some creative work.

Now, let's point out the bad points:

There are some really bad cartoons out there, which are a definite no-no for kids like Hagemaaro, ShinShan etc. The language used is awful.

With the kids watching television all the time, their physical activities which can only be achieved by playing in a playground are not taken care of.

Kids try to imitate what they see on television. Be it language or violence, they just want to behave like their "Super Hero".

When parents continually leave their children to be entertained by the television it can have negative effects on child's mind because children are primarily proactive and like to be doing something.

And one of the major concerns is the time kids spent in watching those cartoons. Every mother has a tough time moving her kids away from television. Ideally what I would suggest is to have fixed television-watching timings.

The best way to help your child create connection from television is if you get involved with them and explain what they are seeing, discuss different scenarios or outcomes, ask questions, and compare what you are seeing to what she has experienced.

Short and Long Term Effects of Bullying - The Victim & the Bully

Bullying is a serious problem faced by our youth today. It does not matter if the bullying takes place in the school, neighborhood or on the internet. It can lead to serious problems for both the victim and the perpetrator.

Soldering Kit

There are short and long term effects of bullying that should be noted for both the victim and the bully.

Soldering Kit

It is important to realize that once it is determined a bullying situation exists, immediate help needs to be given both the victim and the bully.

Short Term Effects for the Victim:

*Extreme depression - always seems sad and withdrawn
*Loss of self-esteem or self-worth may occur
*Trouble sleeping - bad dreams - nightmares
*Bed wetting might occur, especially in younger victims
*Physical Symptoms (upset stomach, headache, etc...)
*Anxiety about going to school or riding the bus
*Truancy could result as a result of being bullied
*Anxiety about attending social events with peers
*Drop in grade average

Short Term Effects for the Bully:

*Difficulty in maintaining friendships with others
*Generally does not do well in school
*Tends to be truant and often drops out of school
*Higher risk for alcohol or substance abuse

Long Term Effects for the Victim:

*If given immediate help the victim should have limited long term effects. This is especially true if the victim is given assistance by a child mental health care professional to resolve the issues of being victimized.

*If the bullying continues for any length of time:

**Chronic depression leading to suicidal tendencies
**Long term psychological post-trauma disorders
**Self-destructive behavior
**Alcohol or substance abuse may result

Long Term Effects for the Bully:

*Increased percentage are convicted of a crime by age 24
*Increased dependency on alcohol and illegal drugs
*Increased chance of spousal or child abuse as an adult
*Continued difficulty in maintaining long term relationships

It is also shown through surveys that boys and girls, victims and bullies, all have a much higher occurrence of carrying concealed weapons to school.

Our children have a tendency to keep the acts of bullying to themselves. Less than half who are involved report the instances to an adult or parent.

This, combined with the statistics that show over half of our children are either a victim of bullying or a bully, makes this a major issue when trying to secure the safety of our children.

There are many websites available for adults who are concerned about the issues of bullying. I urge any parent, adult and child care professional to visit one of these resources to learn more about what can be done to address this serious issue.

The short and long term effects of bullying and cyber bullying are too great to ignore. Immediate action needs to be taken.

The Best and Easiest Way to Fix a Blown Out Speaker

Stereo speakers are built to last. Every time you turn them on they are submitted to abuse and punishment, even more so depending on the type of music you listen to. For example, music with heavy bass shakes everything in your home. Imagine what is going on in the speaker cone.

Soldering Kit

Even the best, quality stereo speakers are bound to crackle from all of this abuse over time. When that happens, you may have the chance to save yourself some money by repairing those broken speakers instead of buying new ones.

Soldering Kit

It all starts with finding the problem causing the sound problems. It can be an enclosure damaged or maybe it blew out from an electrical or thermal fuse. Problems with the voice coil are a common problem, sometimes the crossover network is faulty and even problems as easy as a solder connection can be the cause of your problems. Whatever your speaker issue maybe, it can be fixed. Here is a breakdown of how you can repair a speaker that is blown out.
The first thing you need to do is figure out which speaker is giving you problems. You can easily do this by playing around with the stereo's equalizer. Alter the balance and the fader to isolate the speaker causing the distortion in sound or if there is no sound at all. Be sure not to have the volume blasting or you run the risk of blowing out a good speaker. Once you've figured out which speaker is the bad one, you now need to take it apart. Try to do this step carefully because you don't want to cause further damage to a part which is working fine. Remove the faceplate of the speaker and then gently loosen the seams of the speaker's fabric without tearing it. Now that the speaker cone is visible, you can begin repairing it. Have some tape or glue handy since this is what you will primarily be using if the cone of the speaker is punctured or torn. You'll want to make sure the hole or tear is completely covered before moving on to the next step. Test the voice coil to see if it is damaged in any way such as if it melted at some point for example. If there is even the tiniest of gaps in the coil, no sound will flow from the speaker or it will sound extremely distorted, depending on the size. If you see that the voice coil is indeed melted, then just replace the speaker entirely. If you're going to need any replacement parts, now is the time to order them. They can either be found directly from the manufacturer but they can be expensive or from stereo specialties shops. An often overlooked fact is to know the part number or numbers of the pieces you are looking for. They are normally located on the inside of the speaker or backside of the cone. Doing so will make your life an awful lot easier. Now that you have all parts you need to properly fix the speaker, take a look at how the damaged part is attached to the speaker. Once you remove the broken piece, you are going to need to install the new one the same way. Now that you are all completed putting the speaker back to together, the only thing left to do is test to see if all your hard work paid off. Hook it back up to the stereo and test it at a low volume slowly turning the volume up to see if it can handle. If the speaker is still not working and you feel like did everything correctly, take it to a professional and let them fix it from there.

How to Install an Amp

How to install an Amplifier:

Soldering Kit

1.) Disconnect the battery terminals: Just be safe. Do this.

Soldering Kit

2.) Run the power cable from the battery to the location of the amp or distribution block. (To read more about running wires, click here)

If you run it through any sort of sheet metal, be sure to protect the power cable with a rubber grommet, or some other protective device.

Be sure you have plenty of slack at both ends of the cable. This will make your life easier, trust me!

Be sure you run the power cable away from any RCA cables. I usually run the power cable down the side of the vehicle that the battery is installed on, and run the RCA cables down the center of the vehicle.

Once the cable has been run and secured, leave it alone for the time being. Don't hook it up, cut it or do anything else with it!

Be sure the power cable is secured with wire ties or some other means, BUT! Not until you have run the cable, and determined that the cable is going to work out where it is located.

3.) Find a suitable ground point close to the amplifier

This point should attach to the vehicle's chassis, and be a solid connection.

Run your ground cable from the amp (or distro block).

Just like with the power cable, this wire should be secured and protected. It should not be installed in a location that will distress it.

Use a piece of sandpaper to remove any paint or finish from your ground point. Use it to also sand away any rust or residue on your ground point. You want a good solid connection, so you'll want to see nice shiny metal.

Prepare an appropriately sized ring terminal

If your ground cable is going to be attached with a ring terminal (the most recommended means), attach it now. Remember! Do a good job here. We're looking for a strong, solid electrical connection. If you can use solder, I would recommend it!

Use a washer when attaching your ring terminal to your vehicle's chassis.

Finally, cover the ground point with something non-conductive. Also, Find some spray paint or finish that will protect your ground point from rust.

4.) Be sure to run RCA cables and the remote turn on!

Pull your head unit out of its mounting location.

If it's not already hooked up, hook up your remote turn-on wire to the head unit's wiring harness.

Determine which RCA cables will go to each channel on your amp(s). I find it useful to have a 4-channel cable and an additional 2-channel cable for your subwoofers. This makes it easier to run all of the wires at once.

Run your RCAs and remote turn-on. Keep the RCA cables away from any sort of power cable, especially the power cable for your amp(s). It's OK to run the remote turn-on wire with the RCAs.

Make sure all cables are secured and not installed in a way that will distress them. Be sure they aren't pinched, scraped or kinked during any sort of driving activity. In any places where they'll need protection, be sure to cover them with a tough material.

5.) Run all of your speaker wires.

Now it's time to run more wires! Run speaker wires from your speakers to your amp's installation location.

Just like with all of the different wires above, be sure they are secured and protected.

6.) Hook up all of the wires at the amplifier!

Hook up the RCAs, speaker cables, remote turn on, power then ground.

7.) Hook up a fuse holder near the battery.

Be sure you have this piece of equipment (and a fuse) before you even attempt to hook your amp up to your vehicle's electrical system. Seriously!

The fuse holder MUST be within 18" of the battery.

Be sure the fuse holder is connected solidly to the power wire.

Be sure you have the right sized fuse!

Be sure the fuse holder is mounted in a safe place, and the power wires are all secured away from any moving parts.

8.) Hook up any special battery terminals

If you have any fancy-schmancy battery terminals, now is the time to be sure they're connected properly. Be sure they are secure and protected. Hook up any other of your vehicle's cables to the battery. If you can get covers for your new battery terminals, I would recommend them.

9.) Reconnect the battery.

Put your shiny new terminals on those battery posts!

10.) Test!

Before turning your system on, turn the amplifier gains all the way down. Turn on your system and listen. Does everything work? How much noise do you hear? Is there audible distortion (If so, don't listen for long!) If everything's square, move on to the next step!

11.) Permanately Mount your amplifier

I hope that before you have gone through the previous nine steps, you have thought about how your amp fits into your system, and how you plan to install it. If not, I BEG OF YOU to think about this first. Figure out where you want your amp, how you'll get power to it, and what (if any) components will be installed near it. Also, don't be a fool! Be sure you've budgeted so you can actually afford everything you need for your amp to be installed FLAWLESSLY. Taking just a small amount of time to think about this stuff will pay off for a smooth install, and great sound. If you don't plan, you will screw it up.

When you mount your amp, you'll want to be sure you are protecting it from any sort of physical damage and heat. Car amps are tough, but you need to be sure that you are installing it in a way that protects your amp from these hazards.

Soooooo, to protect your amp from physical damage (because they are usually installed in places where they are prone to damage such as in the trunk or under the seats), it is best to build some sort of enclosure for it. This enclosure should be big enough to contain the amp (and possibly some fans), as well as the appropriate wiring. You will also want to be able to easily access the controls. If you really like to tweak your system, you might want to make your amp rack easily removable, but also keep theft in mind. Be creative on how to protect it. The truth is, you can get really fancy here, or just do something quick. Both will work.

Another thing to keep in mind when building an enclosure for an amp or mounting the amp in a place that is hot or has poor airflow is that the amp will get HOT. Heat damages electronics, so you should figure out a way to keep your amp cool and happy. Use fans, or even redirect the air conditioner!

One last thing about amps: I have found that if your amp is mounted to metal, it is sometimes prone to noise. I recommend mounting your amp to a piece of wood before installing it. This will prevent any sort or weird ground loop effects that introduce noise to your music.

12.) Tweak!

Now that you've installed your amp(s), you're pretty excited to get rollin. Step 1: Be sure all of the amp's gains are down, the bass boost is off, and the crossovers are set to the correct frequency band.

Get one of your favorite CDs, preferably one that is clean sounding. I have found classical and jazz to work great, but alternative and pop work as well. Try to avoid really loud or bass heavy music. If you must, try to use a more melodic CD: Not one that's just all bass, or noise, you know? The important thing is that the CD is representative of what you normally listen to, because it's YOUR system, and it's YOUR music. Darn tootin!

Step 2: Power on!

Step 3: Turn your head units controls to neutral. EQs off, loudness off, fade and balance centered.

Step 4: Turn the volume up until you hear distortion (you know it when you hear it, and go on to step 5), or the volume control is all the way up. (go to step 6)

Step 5: If you hear distortion, back the volume up until no more distortion is heard. At this point, you know how loud your system is gonna go before it starts distorting, sounding horrible, and smoking speakers. (Move on to step 7, and lower your volume!)

Step 6: If your head unit goes all the way up, and doesn't distort, you have a good unit that your amp can handle. Go to your amp, and while the music is playing, slowly turn up the gains. Once you hear distortion, back off a little. Turn your head unit's volume down!

Step 7: Now go to your head unit. Set all of the eq, loudness, crossover controls, and dsp that you want. Repeat steps 4-6 with all of these controls set to how you want them.

Step 8: Set all of your amp's bass boost or other controls to how you want them. Repeat steps 4-6 again.

Step 9: Once everything sounds good, you're ready to put a cover on your amp enclosure, and be sure your fans are hooked up properly. Put it away and forget it!

Step 10: You're in business! Have fun, and don't wake up your neighbors!

New RC Car - Hot Wheels RC Stealth Rides Racing Car

The Hot Wheels RC Stealth Rides Racing Car is a curious mixture of innovation and convention. When you ride it you get to feel a cleverly compiled combination of ingenuity and good old-fashioned dashing fun. A lot of thought has been put into making this little baby. And although it appears to be a midget and you will question the physical returns you are getting for the amount you are shelling out, it can provide a very powerful and thrilling experience once you put it to use. If you want all your doubts to melt there is only one way - go for this Hot Wheels RC Racing Car.

Soldering Kit

We recommend this car to be used by kids in the age group of 6 to 12, although the manufacturer recommends a minimum age of 8. The car comes as an assembled unit with a controller cum charger cum holder. Also provided with this are 3 extra batteries and a set of instructions. It would be advisable to be thorough with the instructions before you start operating this little devil.

Soldering Kit

You might have purchased other such cars and waited for them to charge fully before you can operate them. Well The Hot wheels RC Stealth Rides Racing Car is a bit different - you can start operating it the moment you get it out of the box. It has a folding system. When you pack it you first make it flat, as if your foot trampled it upon, by picking it up and gently squeezing it between your thumb and index finger. This action activates an entire set of levers and links that cause the roof and windows to collapse downward into the body and into the sides of the car. Along with this the wheels and tires fold outward to complete the process of transforming a three-dimensional object into an almost two-dimensional one. The folded version of the car fits with precision into the large slot like pouch in the controller. The combined set of folded car and its controller is only as thick as a thick touch screen mobile phone.

Driving the car requires you to only put it on the ground and press a concealed button on the rear window. The entire car comes together in almost a fraction of second and is ready to vroom. And do not be worried about any damage to the car due to frequent winding and unwinding - the process is perfectly safe and absolutely smooth. There are no axles for the car to enable the winding and unwinding actions. The soft rubber tires take a good grip over most indoor surfaces. The Hot Wheels RC Stealth Rides Racing Car has a very low ground clearance and therefore should be used indoors only. The front wheels do not steer. For turning the car there are two side motors - one on each side - that drive each of the rear wheels. When you operate one of them the car turns in that direction. If you want the car to spin in place for some extra fun, play both these motors in opposite directions.

Apart from the low ground clearance that restricts the movements of the car indoors, the only other area of concern is the batteries used to operate it. The 3 batteries enable you to run the car immediately after you purchase it. But these AG13 or LR44 batteries are not very common and you may have to visit more than one store before you find one. You get three additional ones with the car. However, that does not diminish the thrilling moments this baby can give you when you drive her. And most importantly this car does not fuss around when you flat it out and park it.

Children's Greed

Children are an amazing bunch regardless of their up bringing but there is a particular bunch that is quite unique. Greedy children. In most cases the greed can be brought about by a number of issues that mainly manifest when the person is an adult but in other cases it is simply as a result of poor upbringing on the part of the parents. Greedy children do however have a positive side to them and the one that comes to mind instantly is that they are quite amusing and entertaining.

Soldering Kit

Greedy children will eat anything under the sun as long as it is smaller than they are and does not bite back. This makes them a good source of comedy especially at parties and other social occasions. The child will eat anything and everything within sight to the embarrassment of the parents and to the amusement of he other party goers.

Soldering Kit

The jokes however come to an end when this child approaches you with sticky fingers ready to attack you and your plate full force. At this point the humor is totally gone and is replaced by feelings of fear and dread. Greedy children are quite the interesting bunch and at the end of the day they are simply adorable whether you are friend, foe or the obstruction from the buffet table.

For such a child to be controlled is fairly easy but it will take a lot of will power on the part of the parents although playing dead at such trying times is always an option. To totally circumvent these behavioral issues it is important for the parents to teach the children good manners from the onset to avoid having to deal with greed later on in life. Children are truly a gift and every single thing they do is to be marveled at and enjoyed.

Remote Car Starter Buying Guide

My store has been installing Remote Car Starters since the early 1990s. This experience has taught us what is important in a quality remote starter installation. With the cold season almost upon us, we thought it would be a good time to post our Top 10 List (in no particular order):

Soldering Kit

10. Warranty

Soldering Kit

The actual remote starter brain should be warrantied for as long as you own the car. Many quality companies offer this. If they do not, it is a possible sign of inferior equipment. Remote controls, however are rarely warrantied for more than a year. Our Pro line remotes carry a 2 year warranty and all our 2 way remotes have a replacement plan.

9. Engine Speed Sensing

A good remote starter should have some method of monitoring the engine RPM's. Why is this important? There are a couple reasons:

* On a very cold day, the car might not start on the first turn of the key. The same is true with a remote starter. It might not start the first time the starter does it's thing. Without a method of sensing engine RPM's the remote starter will have no way of knowing that the vehicle has failed to start. The end result is that you go out to your car and it is still cold.

* The other main reason is over-rev protection. A quality remote starter will know if the engine speed is too high and shut off. A remote start that does not offer RPM sensing cannot know if this level is exceeded and could end with damage to the vehicle.

8. Transmitter Range

You want to make sure that the remote start that you are buying will allow you to start/stop/lock/unlock, etc from a long distance. Many people say that they just park their car right outside of their house and do not need a long rang transmitter. Just keep in mind the trips to the movies, the mall, the amusement park, etc. You will want to use your remote start then also and you will not be parked as close as at home. Our transmitters offer a minimum of 800 feet and some are over a mile!

7. Hood Safety Switch

Make sure that there is an emergency cutoff installed under the hood. This cutoff is designed to prevent the vehicle from remote starting if the hood is up. This protects you and your mechanic from forever having someone else open your ketchup bottles! DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS! Many shops skip this step because it saves time. Mobile Edge integrates a hood cutoff on every single job.

6. Manufacturer

Make sure that the manufacturer is a company that specializes in remote car starters. There are many companies out there that simply throw a label on a product and call it their own. You want to avoid that. It is our experience that these companies provide little if any support for their products and many will not be in business next year. Stick with the experts.

5. New Car Warranty

Do not let your car dealer tell you that an aftermarket remote car starter will void your warranty . This is against the law. The Magnuson Moss Act prevents a dealer from voiding a warranty simply because of the addition of aftermarket equipment. If that equipment or associated installation causes damage to the vehicle, the dealer does not have to warranty the job. This is more of a reason to go to a specialist shop that sell good remote starters and installs them professionally. I have a detailed PDF on this subject.

4. Do it Yourself?

Unless you are a certified technician with experience in remote car starter installation, DO NOT attempt to install your own remote starter. I know... The one you saw at WalMart comes with an instructional video. That video will teach you enough to make you dangerous. Trust me! It will not teach you how to integrate the transponder in a 2004 Ford or bypass the security in an 06 Trailblazer. The instructional video may have worked in the early 1990's, but today's cars are very sophisticated. Save yourself a ton of expense and headache and have it installed by someone who does this for a living and can be responsible for the job. This brings us to number 3.

3. Buy it Here / Install it There?

Do not buy your remote starter on eBay (or WalMart or Amazon, etc) and expect to find a quality, reputable shop that will install it for you. While many aftermarket shops will install stereos and amps purchased elsewhere, few if any will install a remote start purchased elsewhere. During remote starter season, the good shops are busy enough trying to keep up with their own work. If you find a shop that will install someone else's remote starter, they are likely not very busy. Do you want to trust your vehicle to that guy?

There is another very important reason not to buy a remote starter at one place and have it installed at another. Let's say something goes wrong. A remote starter is an electronic product and can fail. The guy that puts it in will blame the product and the manufacturer will say that it was installed wrong. Guess who is stuck in the middle with no recourse. When you have the shop that you buy a remote starter from install it, you have one place to go in the event of a failure. There cannot be any finger pointing.

2. Go to a Specialist

Look for a specialty shop. Not to bash any of the chain stores, but they have a much higher turnover rate with installers than a specialty shop. These are people that likely have less experience than a long term employee at a specialty shop. It is my experience that many installer "cut their teeth" at a chain store and, once they have more experience, move on to a specialist (We pay more!).

Many specialists (not all though) will solder all of their connections. I feel that this is very important. Crimp connectors can save up to an hour of installation time, but when dealing with the vehicle's electrical system, I want a rock solid connection. The only way to get that is by soldering the wires together. Mobile Edge has soldered every connection on every job for nearly 15 years.

Will a remote starter from a specialty shop cost more than from a chain store? Sometimes yes. But put that into perspective. Even if the job cost 0 more from a specialist, that difference is less than 1/10 of 1% of what you probably paid for your car. Why take the risk. Not to mention, when you deal with a specialist, you can talk to the installer, salesman and, in many cases, the owner. There is definitely a value in that.

1. More than Just a Remote Starter

Make sure that you review all of the convenience features that can be added to your remote starter with your salesperson before the installation! Most higher quality remote starters will allow a ton of cool features to be added or controlled from the remote. Anything from heated seats to keyless entry and rear defrost can be integrated with most better systems. It is A LOT cheaper to have this done at the time of installation. If you want to add it later, you may be paying for several hours of additional labor.

The Bottom Line

In summary, the cheapest price does not always save you money! When selecting a shop to have a remote starter put in, ask a lot of questions. How long have they been in business? How much experience do their technicians have? Do they have sophisticated computer programs to aid with installation? How do they handle warranty issues? You get the idea. The better shops will clearly rise to the top. They might cost a little more up front, but that extra expense will pay dividends in quality and piece of mind. I am sure that you will find that Mobile Edge is one of the best shops for your Remote Car Starter Installation.

PC Oscilloscopes: I Can Really Build My Own?

PC Based Oscilloscopes are a great way to display your electronic measurements on to your computer screen. They offer all of the same functions that a traditional bench top Oscilloscope offers, except that they allow you to display your waveforms and readings on a computer instead of a CRT. Now what would you think if I told you that not only are these new Technological wonders very affordable, but now you can build one of these PC Oscilloscopes yourself. Many of us think of Electronic Kit building as a thing of the past, and certainly the thought of building something like an Oscilloscope just doesn't seem possible these days.

Soldering Kit

Well think again, because now there are PC Oscilloscope kits available that offer the same great functions as manufactured PC Oscilloscopes. Features like Step markers for voltage, time and frequency, digital displays, data storage, portability and more. They make a great additional to any Electronic Technicians or Engineers tool box, and there is nothing that gives you more pleasure than knowing that you have created something with your own hands.

Soldering Kit

Building these PC Oscilloscope kits is actually quite easy and these kits don't require you to be an expert to build. If you have a basic knowledge of Electronics, soldering and the ability to identify Electronic components, you can build one of these kits. Step by step instructions are included taking you through every step of the building process. You will also find all of the necessary components and other parts required to build the kit. The only thing you will need to supply is your time.

If building a PC Oscilloscope is something that you are considering then you should make sure that you have these basic tools on hand before you start your project: A 25 watt Soldering Iron, a Solder Sucker, Needle Nose Pliers, Solder, a Work Light with magnifier and Cutters. A nice set of Precision Screwdrivers would be helpful as well.

Make sure you have a work space that allows you ample space to lay your parts our and give you enough room to work on your kit. Having adequate lighting to work on your project is a must especially when working with small parts. Take into consideration where you decide to work on your project as well. A kit of this size is something that you will most likely not finish in one evening. So make sure your work area will be safe and out of the way from high traffic areas.

PC Oscilloscope Kits are a great way for anyone to learn about Electronics. They not only provide hours of enjoyment , but offer great hands on learning about electricity, Ohms Law, resistors, capacitors, current, voltage, sensors, IC's and more. Best of all they give you the confidence and satisfaction of knowing you created something yourself.

Building Your Own Still - The Perfect Science Fair Project

If you are one who is searching for that perfect undertaking that will surely win the year's award for the best science fair project then don't look any further beyond constructing the simple still. For those who do not have any idea as to what a still is, it is an apparatus that is meant to distill, or separate, liquid mixtures by boiling since different liquids have different boiling points.

Soldering Kit

Before starting with the construction, it is important to note that building a still may lead one to run-ins with the law which makes it important for one to be knowledgeable of the regulations in one's area and to devote the project entirely for scientific and educational purposes.

Soldering Kit

To start the construction process of the still: the following materials are needed: a 4-gallon size copper boiler, a copper sheeting that is 18" in diameter, a copper pipe that is 36" long and 2" in diameter, a 24-inch copper tubing that is 1" in diameter, lead-free solder, glass thermometer, milk can made out of stainless steel, two reducing coupler that have the following dimensions: 1" x 1-1/2" and the other 1-1/2" x 2", an elbow joint that has a 1" diameter, a 3" nipple, 1" x 2-1/2" nipple, a large copper tub, 1-1/2" copper elbow pipe, copper coils, standard spigot faucet, any container that can be easily sealed, a siphon, an airlock, a rubber stopper, flour and water (a silicon kit can be used as an alternative), a connecting ring, yeast, a large amount of cold water, and the mixture to be fermented.

For the tools, one would need a holder gun, a drill, a saw, and a heat source.

To assemble the boiler, one would have to saw the copper boiler in half and lay on its open end the copper sheeting. Cut a piece from the sheeting that is 1 centimeter larger in diameter than the copper boiler's open end. Solder then the sheeting to the open end of the copper boiler. After this, place the boiler flat side down and drill a 2" hole on the boiler's top. Solder a connecting ring directly on top of this hole.

To construct the still's column, bore a hole on the top of the elbow connector that will be big enough for it to be soldered to the 3"-sized nipple. Soldering is also done to the 2" pipe to fasten it to the ring on top of the boiler. The elbow connector is in turn soldered to top of the pipe with the help of the 1 x 1-1/2" reducing coupler. Solder then the nipple in place after which the thermometer is inserted there and secured into place with the use of the silicon kit or flour and water. The elbow pipe is then soldered to the other coupler. The 1" elbow joint is then fastened with the end of the pipe in a way that makes the elbow point downward. This end is then soldered with the smaller nipple. The nipple is then soldered to the coiled copper tubing and the spigot is soldered into the drilled hole present on the side of the metal container. The heat source is then placed below the boiler.

Put the yeast and the fermented mixture in the container, which will be drilled with a hole just enough for a rubber stopper to make it sealed air-tight.

You are now ready to use the still. Constructing it may be a bit laborious but with the proper materials and a thorough adherence to the right steps of building it, the still is just the thing for that science fair competition.
