The Secret to Perfect Solder Lines

Solder is used to hold the various pieces of stained glass together in a stained glass panel. To achieve a professional quality, solder lines need to be smooth and uniform. This can be achieved by following basic steps and using quality tools and supplies.

Soldering Kit

The tools and supplies needed for soldering include a soldering iron, solder and flux. The soldering iron should have a ceramic heating element with either a built in temperature controller or plugged into a separate temperature controller unit. The solder used needs to be a 60/40 mixture of alloys for the majority of your soldering. For decorative soldering, an alloy mixture of 60/37 solder is recommended. An odorless non-smoking liquid flux is the preferred flux.

Soldering Kit

Basic Steps for Soldering

Heat the soldering iron to 68 on the temperature controller Use an abrasive pad or wet sponge to clean the iron's tip before you begin and periodically as you work. Lightly apply flux to a section of the stained glass project you are working on Using 60/40 solder, unroll it to a manageable length, and then lightly touch the area to be worked on. Place the solder on the tip of your iron and move both the iron and the solder at a slow constant rate following the fluxed copper foil seams. When you need to end or stop, do not just move the iron vertically off, but rather slide the iron towards the glass. Don't solder out to the perimeter of your stained glass piece, leave approximately ½ inch along the edge. This will allow the zinc came to fit over your glass. When finished with one side of your stained glass piece, carefully turn it over and repeat the same process on that side.

How to Avoid Common Problems

Pits or bubbles in solder lines - Too much flux causes pits and bubbles Portions of copper foil visible - Using too little flux, portions of the copper foil will remain visible Lumpy lines - The iron is not hot enough, turn the temperature up in small increments Glass breaks - Either the iron was too hot or it was held in one place too long Solder spits and sputters - Too much flux was used Lines flat - The iron was moved too quickly or not enough solder was used Solder bulges - The iron was moved too slowly or too much solder was used Peaks in solder - The iron was not hot enough Solder seeps through to the other side - The iron was too hot Copper foil lifts up when soldering - This could be a result from too hot of an iron, moving too slowly, too much flux or a bad foiling job

While patina will mask some inconsistencies in your solder lines, others will still be noticeable and take away from the professional look of your piece. With patience, practice and the correct tools and supplies you can have professional solder lines.

Blazer SI-100 Excalibur Multi-Purpose Butane Torch and Hot Air Soldering Kit Overview

The Blazer SI-100 Excalibur, multi-purpose, butane torch and hot air soldering kit is a tool kit that provides tools for soldering, hot air blowing and torch flame needs. The torch creates a precise flame emitting from a nozzle head, allowing direct heat application to an object. It is commonly used for detailed purposes such as brazing, plumbing, soldering, heating, jewelry making, and culinary, dental, and lab applications. Tools within the kit are also used for electronic, automotive, woodworking, lapidary, and general maintenance.

The SI-100 is a multi-purpose tool kit, providing a self-igniting and cordless soldering iron, hot air blower and refillable butane gas torch. The set includes five, interchangeable tip choices: reflector, hot air blower, knife, one 3.5-millimeter chisel and one 3.0-millimeter diagonal. It also comes with a wrench, sponge, and one tube of 60/40 coiled silver tube of solder. The torch features a child-resistant mechanism, and an instant ignition switch.

The torch houses a piezoelectric ignition system, which is based on a pressurized molecular reaction, and requires no electric connection. Piezoelectric energy occurs when the trigger is activated, releasing a small, spring-loaded internal hammer that strikes a crystal, producing a spark and resulting in gas flame ignition.

With a maximum flame temperature of 2,500 degrees F, the torch has a 7.0-gram gas capacity, weighs 4.9 ounces and is 9.0 (l) inches. The case measures 10.25 (l) x 4.38 (w) x 1.5 (h) inches. This product is intended strictly for use in professional and industrial environments. In accordance with federal regulations, home use of this product is prohibited.

Since 1985, Blazer Products has created an array of professional and industrial tools and equipment. Located in Farmingdale, NY, the company manufactures a variety of torches and ultrasonic cleaners. Blazer Products is known worldwide for its original micro torch products.

The SI-100 kit comes in a hard shell carrying case, and the torch operates with a standard butane canister (sold separately).

Choosing the Right Soldering Iron

You can choose from wireless soldering tools like Butane Solder Irons, Solder Torches and Rechargeable Solder Irons or maybe an Instant Cool Solder Iron is on you list. Of course don't
forget about the traditional standbys like AC Soldering Guns and Soldering Irons.

Soldering Kit

Before you make your purchase of your soldering tool there are some things you should take into consideration. What application will you be using your Soldering Tools? What type of heat will your soldering jobs require? Will you need a cordless soldering tool for more portability or will you be working at a repair bench where you will have easy access to a power supply? Also choosing the proper soldering tips should be an important factor you consider before making your purchase.

Soldering Kit

So let's start off with the type of soldering tool you should choose. If your work is for the most part
performed at a service bench atmosphere then I would suggest choosing a Soldering Station. There are many choices of Solder Stations, but the general rule is to choose one that has an adjustable power (wattage) setting. This gives you many Soldering Irons in one tool. The Solder Station also gives you a place to quickly store your Solder Iron between uses. The biggest downfall of a Solder Station is it's lack of portability because of its size and need for an AC power supply.

If you decide to choose one of today's quick cool Solder Irons you may want to take these important factors into consideration first. They are indeed the best when it comes to portability. They don't require an AC power source, and most batteries in these type Solder Irons in most cases give you up to 10 hours of use before needing to be recharged. The downfall with these types of Solder Irons is the lack of power (wattage). The fast cool Solder Irons I have had the pleasure of using had a maximum power of ten watts. This may be ample power for small solder jobs or work with heat sensitive components, but if you are working with wire or larger components that are not heat sensitive this will not provide enough
power for the job.

Solder Irons and Soldering Guns that require an AC power source offer a wide variety of power (wattage) options and some portability in one package. Solder Guns offer a wattage that provide enough power for soldering wire and other large components, but don't allow the technician the flexibility to get into small areas. Solder Irons on the other hand give you the flexibility of a wide range of wattages for 6 watts up to 60 watts. They also allow you to change to different styles of soldering tips for almost every imaginable soldering job.

Butane Solder Irons also offer the technician the portability desired of a cordless Solder Iron, the choice of soldering tips and the power (wattage) required for most soldering jobs. Of course they require you to have additional butane on hand for refills, but for the most parts they make an excellent choice.

So now that you are an expert in regards to Soldering Irons go out there and shop with confidence. I'm sure you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Stained Glass Soldering - A Beginner's Guide

Soldering stained glass can sometimes be frustrating for a beginner. Do not be discouraged; it may take a little while to get really good, but with a little practice and patience, anyone can be an expert. This article describes the best practices for soldering when using the copper foil method.

Soldering Kit

If you have never soldered stained glass before, it is going to be well worth the effort to practice on some scrap pieces of glass first. I recommend taking four square pieces, wrapping copper foil around the edges and assembling them into one large square. This type of arrangement has the two main types of joints, a single joint where two pieces of glass meet and an intersection joint, where multiple pieces of glass meet. The intersection joint is in the center of the large square where all four pieces of glass meet. This kind of joint can be the trickiest to get looking good. Keep reading, I will explain how to get that pesky joint looking great every time.

Soldering Kit

Once your soldering iron is hot and the glass assembled, the first step is to tack all the pieces together. Apply soldering flux on all the joints. I have found the easiest way to tack together stained glass is to hold the soldering iron with the flat part of the tip horizontal just above the glass, touch the solder to the iron tip until a small bead forms and lightly touch the copper foil. It does not take much solder to tack the glass pieces together. Start at the edges and work in towards the center making sure to tack every piece. You do not want them moving when doing the final soldering.

With all the glass tacked together, the second step is to solder all the joints. This is typically the hardest thing for a beginner to master. This is mainly because two things must be done at the same time, keeping the soldering iron moving and feeding the solder onto the iron. The key to an even solder line is to feed a consistent amount of solder as the iron is moved across the joint. Feeding too much solder creates large bulging solder joints and not feeding enough solder leads to flat uneven joints. Apply flux to all the joints. Start at the edge of a joint; hold the iron so the flat part of the tip is vertical to the work piece.

As you touch the solder to the iron tip, place it on the joint and begin dragging or pushing (whichever is more comfortable) while maintaining a constant solder bead. When you come to an intersection where multiple joints meet, make sure to apply solder about one half inch into each incoming joint. If you do this correctly, all the solder at the intersection will be melted and cool at the same time. This makes that joint look very smooth. Start at another joint and work your way toward the intersection again. This time, when you reach the solder that is sticking out from the intersection, simply melt a little ways into it to join the new solder line with the old one. You should not have to re-solder the intersection again. Do not forget to wipe the tip of the iron frequently on a damp sponge to keep it clean.

One mistake that many beginners make is to pick the soldering iron straight up off a joint. This will leave an imperfection in the solder which will have to be fixed later. Instead, move the iron back and forth on the joint so there is melted solder on either side of the tip. Pull the iron off to the side making sure to keep it touching the glass. Once free from the melted solder, you can pick up the iron. The flux will keep the solder from sticking to the glass and make for a very professional looking joint.

Do not get discouraged if, at first, the solder lines are not perfect. Simply drag the iron across the joint again until you get the results you were looking for. After a little practice, you will be soldering stained glass like a professional.

Soldering Tattoo Needles

As a tattoo artist, you are more than likely to have found that the costs of tattooing can be great. However, some costs can be cut back considerably if you have the time, and knowledge to do so.

Soldering Kit

Making your own tattoo needles can save you money, but is it worth the time? That is something that you will need to ask yourself. Every artist will develop their own technique in needle making. Although, it is more common to purchase pre-made, and pre-sterilized tattoo needles.

Soldering Kit

Tattoo needles are formed by soldering a grouping of needles onto a needle bar, or back stem. The needle bars length will range from 4.5-5 inches in length. All needle bars made for tattooing have a loop, or eyelet at one end.

The groupings of needles can be made in several different sizes and shapes, however the more common groupings are rounds, flats, and mags (magnums). Rounds are more commonly used for lining, or portrait work. Flats for shading, and mags for fill work.

Rounds are made by soldering the needles in a circular pattern, tighter rounds are more common for line work while looser rounds are more suited to shading. Flats are soldered side by side in a row, and can as well be either "loose" or "tight" configuration, although most artists prefer a looser grouping of needles. Mags can be a single, or double stack much like flats they are soldered side by side, however they are separated into upper, and lower rows, or they are double stacked.

Making your own needles is a meticulous process, and you will need to have the proper set up to do so. Remember, just because you are making your own needles there are still sterilization steps that need to be taken. Whether pre-made needles bought in bulk, or self-made needles they will need to be packaged individually and autoclaved before use.

How to Choose a Soldering Iron For Your Stained Glass Kit

When you start your stained glass hobby and put together your first stained glass kit, you'll find that your soldering iron is one of the tools that you will use most often.

Soldering Kit

Creating items of stained glass is usually done by one of two primary methods. The traditional lead came method is used to make leaded glass windows or other, usually larger items. The copper foil method is used to make beautiful Tiffany style lamps or other more delicate artwork. Although the materials you use to join your stained glass pieces is not the same in each of these methods, you will still need to use your soldering iron to attach, or solder, these pieces together.

Soldering Kit

It is really not necessary, especially when starting out, to have a large or costly soldering iron. In fact a lightweight and easy to handle iron is best to allow you to easily solder the finer joints you will have between small pieces of glass.

When you look to purchase a soldering iron you will find that they are rated by their wattage. The amount of heat put out is determined by the rated wattage of your iron. And unless you have prior experience and intend to do large projects such as church windows as small soldering iron in the 80 to 100 watt range will handle all your needs.

On the web stained glass suppliers such as Delphi Glass have good quality soldering irons that are made for working with stained glass. Irons of this class usually are sold with a number of extra tips. There is an assortment of different widths. This allows you to easily control the final width of your soldering joints and build up the solder so the final look is even and clean. It is a simple matter to change tips and by doing so change the width of your solder line. The different tips also vary by the amount of heat that is put out. By using different tips you can control the amount of heat.

When you are choosing between the various soldering irons for your stained glass kit try to stay with one that has iron plated tips. Tips are quite easy to keep clean and with good care will last a long time. By taking care of your tips and making sure you strike them off and clean them before you switch to a different one you will find that they will improve in performance over time. By using them and keeping them clean they become smoother and the solder flows off them smoothly and easily.

If you are starting your hobby and looking to get your first stained glass kit, or are putting a kit together piece by piece, there is no need to spend a lot of money on your first iron. When you are first starting out you won't want to spend a lot of money getting an iron, but you probably should stay away from the very cheapest ones.

Look at the various choices available. An iron priced in the middle of those available would be a good choice. As you get a feel for your work and learn more about what types of project you enjoy doing you will also become more familiar with doing soldering and using your iron. Then if your craft takes you in a specific direction you can consider getting another iron that is more targeted to the work you will be doing.

Overview of Gas Soldering Irons

Soldering irons are hand tools most often used when soldering or welding. Their primary function is to provide heat, which in turn melts the solder and allows it to flow through the joints between two different work pieces, effectively joining them. A gas soldering iron is generally composed of material that has a heated tip and a very insulated handle to protect the hands. Heating can be achieved through the passage of an electrical current through a resistive material, but the more common method includes the combustion of gas which is either transmitted through a tank attached to the iron, or directly through and unprotected flame.

Soldering Kit

Gas soldering irons are generally used for brazing, welding or, occasionally, for burning designs into wood and engraving. They are relatively easy to use, gas especially, since it only involves holding a button while angling the fire at the two pieces to be welded. However, easy as they may be to use, they should not be used lightly or given to children. Mistakes or careless use can easily result in physical harm. Good ideas for safety are wearing gloves and always having goggles as well as a bowl of cool water to put your fingers in if they for some reason become burned (this is not recommended for those using an electric one, as any water near electrical tools is a greater risk than asset).

Soldering Kit

Buying a gas soldering iron is a relatively simple process. You can find a large selection for sale online. For those that feel they need more help in finding the right one for their projects, going to a local tool shop can be a great help-the sales staff should be able to answer any questions you might have and find the right iron for your needs. They can also give more specific pointers on safety and usage once you have made your selection.

The Function of the Soldering Iron

For who are already familiar to the electronic stuff, you must know the soldering iron tool. You can meet the tool in many shops like jewelry shop, electronic shop, and craft shop. This iron tool is available in the market or online shop.

Soldering Kit

The main function of this tool is to join the two objects together so they can join together permanently with the solder. If you buy the solders, they are usually including the flux and joining material like silver or other metal types. There are also some types of solder which you need to apply the flux paste before you apply the iron tool.

Soldering Kit

The tool itself has two types: soldering irons and solders and the orange handle iron. You can use the orange handle iron to do the stained glass practice. You can choose the wired iron or the iron with the battery power. However, there is a rare iron which uses the power from the propane tanks.
The iron provides the heat to melt the object. However, you do not need to get scared to hold it since it has the handle which stays cool so you can do the work comfortably.

You can use this tool to create the stained glass creation for your window or lamp panels. The iron can also be used for jewelry making or repair. You can find the iron with different sizes. It is better for you to keep away from the children when you use this tool.

Not all of the tools are the same. You cannot use the same iron for different works. It will be dangerous if you do that. For example, you cannot use the same tool which is used to melt the metal. You cannot this tool for the jewelry making or repair your cookware.
